In this crazy busy world where we’re constantly pulled in different directions and jet setting from place to place it is important to remember to take some time to still the mind. This is why I was so grateful to discover a local Toronto event close to home called Move + Meditate. I sat down with the event’s founder Anna Gala to find out a little more about what this is all about and learn a little more about the benefits of meditation. Oh, and we also put our new yoga leggings to the test!

I had a great time at the Move + Meditate event. Can you tell us a little more about the concept and what people can expect when attending?
Move + Meditate is a new event series I've started to help people integrate fitness and meditation together. It is so important to train our bodies AND our minds so they can work together to live a balanced and healthy life. Each event will have 30 minutes of fitness / movement with a guest trainer or instructor and 30 minutes of guided meditation with moi!
What inspired you to become a Meditation Coach?
I have always had a passion for giving back and helping others, and through my journey I truly realized that the best possible way to help someone is by teaching them how to help themselves. Helping them tap back into their own inner strength through self development practices and meditation. It is truly the most empowering ways to live a happier, more fulfilling life.
What are some of the short and long term benefits one can expect from practicing meditation?
Meditation is all about reconnecting with your true self, slowing down the pace and learning to be the observer or witness of your life experience. Besides the long list of health benefits like reducing stress, lower blood pressure, increased immunity, emotional balancing, anxiety relief, increased focus, optimism and happiness, enhanced self esteem and self acceptance and so many more ... It allows us to gain better perspective of ourselves and our lives in order to be emotionally, physically, spiritually and mentally healthy. The mind is a powerful tool and we can learn to harness it through meditation.
Calming the mind and being present sounds like an easy task but most people have trouble truly achieving this. What are some tips for beginners that you can suggest?
Daily practice, even for a few breaths at a time, can make the world of difference. Focusing on your breath, connecting to your physical body and repeating affirmations or a mantra are great ways to become more focused and present during your meditation , but when you are going through your day the best ways to become present and aware are harnessing the power of your breath and culti vating an attitude of gratitude. Simply breathe deeply and look around you to find things you are grateful for. They are everywhere all the time ... You just have to look.
