Spring Tastes So Good!

Spring Tastes So Good!
Written By: Fiona Thomson

Yay! Spring is finally here. The birds are chirping, the sun in shining and it’s finally warmer temperatures outside. Minus a couple hiccups with the ice storm and torrential down pours. Spring has sprung its leak and is ready to bloom. I don’t know about you but when Spring rolls around I like to do a serious Spring clean up. I start by cleaning up my living space so it’s spotless. I throw out junk that has been sitting around all winter and not getting used. I enjoy getting rid of old clothes and shoes from my closet and happily donating multiple bag loads to the less fortunate. Getting rid of old clothes means room for more leggings!

My most favourite type of Spring cleaning is my clean gut body clean out. Spring is the perfect time to clean out all that heavy winter comfort food. It’s definitely a good time to gear up for summer body preparation. The quickest and easiest way for me to get back on track is by making green smoothies. My Ninja blender is the most widely used appliance in my kitchen. I like smoothies because it’s fast and easy to make. I can make some the night before and grab and go the next morning.

Here’s a few of my Fiona original recipes that I tend to make the most. All have different nutritional benefits, act as a meal replacements or help regulate normal bowel movements. Basically I call them “shit shakes” you get all the healthy benefits and will probably have to use to bathroom more often. Natural high fibre ingredients with all the added vitamins and minerals your body needs for glowing skin, and tip top functioning of organs. Spring clean out at its finest.

Beets all Over my Body

1 cup of spinach
2 cup of frozen strawberries
2 chopped beets (skin removed)
1/2 avocado
2 Honey Crisp or any sweet apple (Core removed)
1/2 fresh lemon juiced
2 cups of water
1/2 cup of ice for thick consistency*

Preparation: 15 mins
Steam Beets for 10-15mins to remove skin easily.
Place spinach, frozen strawberries, avocado, cored apples and water into blender and mix until smooth.
Add beets and lemon juice and blend until mixture is smooth.
Add 1/2 cup ice cubes if you want smoothie to have a thicker consistency.

Yum! Enjoy this Beet Down which is high in fibre, immune-boosting vitamin C, potassium which is good for healthy nerve and muscle function, and manganese which is good for your bones, liver, kidneys, and pancreas. Beets also contain the B vitamin folate, which helps reduce the risk of birth defects.

Ooooh weee! I like this smoothie when I’m having a particularly sweet tooth. It’s like dessert in a glass. Benefits of raspberries include aids in weight loss, boosts immunity, helps reduce wrinkles and age spots, protects against bacterial and fungal infections, and helps regulate women’s menstrual cycles. Benefits of Chia seeds are an excellent source of omega-3 fatty acids, rich in antioxidants, high in fibre, iron, and calcium. Omega-3 fatty acids help raise HDL cholesterol, the "good" cholesterol that protects against heart attack and stroke. Benefits of raw cacao powder 40x antioxidants compared to blueberries, highest plant based source of Iron, magnesium which are great for the heart and brain function, more calcium than cow’s milk and acts a natural mood elevator and antidepressant. So drink up! Not only does this smoothie taste great it’s good for you.

Superpower Gorgeous Glow

2 cups of spinach
2 cups of unsweetened almond milk
1 1/2 cup of pineapple
1 cup of frozen peaches
1/2 avocado
1 tsp vanilla extract
1 tsp of matcha powder

Preparation: 5 mins
Add all ingredients and mix until blended smooth.

Damn I love this smoothie! I can feel my skin glowing and radiating it’s natural skin beauty. So many antioxidants in this drink that help to repair damaged skin or hair. Pineapples contain high amounts of vitamin C and manganese which help to boost the immune system, build strong bones and aid in digestion. Pineapples are fat free, cholesterol free and low in sodium. Despite their sweetness pineapples are low in calories. Benefits of peaches are rich in minerals such as calcium, potassium, magnesium, iron, manganese, phosphorous, zinc, and copper. They are low in calories, contain no saturated fat or cholesterol, and are a good source of dietary fiber as well. Avocados are super beneficial in maintaining healthy skin, preventing bad breath, keeping eyes healthy, reducing cardiovascular disease and aiding in digestion and weight management. Matcha Powder gives this drink the “superpower” because of its benefits of superpower antioxidants, boosts metabolism, burns calories, naturally detoxifies, calms the mind, relaxes the body, enhances mood and concentration, prevents disease, lowers cholesterol and among many other rich vitamins and minerals included. Drink up this spa in a glass. You’ll be glowing from the inside out.

Here’s just a few of my favourite smoothies but I’m not limited to only these three. I love experimenting by mixing concoctions. Sometimes the smoothies turn out amazing and sometimes it can be more of a work in progress. Sometimes it’s just a complete disaster. I research various websites for smoothie inspired drinks. Here’s a couple websites that I love. Check out their websites and also download their phone apps for better smoothie making recipes. www.simplegreensmoothies.com

Drink up and Enjoy!

Cheers :)
